Why we start, When we start

its not about age, its about readiness

We believe martial arts are arts—not activities.

·       Many youth programs focus primarily on entertainment, games, and keeping children engaged. There is certainly a place for that, but it isn't our calling.

·       At Deep Water Academy, we preserve Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and Muay Thai as they were intended to be learned: with maturity, discipline, respect, and technical excellence. We would rather have students begin a little later and truly learn the art than begin early and receive a watered-down version.

A message to parents:

Parents often ask why our minimum age is different from many martial arts schools.

The answer is simple: we believe martial arts are arts.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and Judo are extraordinary disciplines. They teach humility, courage, patience, self-control, and perseverance—but they are also complex arts that deserve to be learned with purpose and respect.

Over the last 30 years of studying and teaching, I've become convinced that these arts are best introduced when a student is developmentally ready to understand them—not simply imitate them.

Many schools choose a different path, and that's perfectly okay. Our calling is simply different.

Our goal has never been to build the biggest children's program. Our goal is to preserve the integrity of these arts and pass them on well.

We believe that beginning at the right time creates better students, better training partners, and a lifelong appreciation for the art itself.

We don't ask, "Is your child old enough?"

We ask, "Is your child ready?"

An exceptional 13-year-old may be ready, likewise a 17-year-old may not be. Kids mature and develop differently and that’s why we view them as students, rather than customers.

When a young student is ready, we would be honored to welcome them to Deep Water Academy.
